A Christmas To Remember
I idolized my grandmother for as long as my memory serves me correctly. She has taught me how to load half crockery, bed linens in a fair, to organize a house, cooking, etc. There was one Christmas, however, that stands out in my memory. Christmas was my grandmother patiently taught me to do crafts. Grandma makes some serious senior scrapbooking, but its crafting is legendary.
Traveling the river and through the woods to accurately describe my Grandmas house this year in particular. I was 9 years old and Christmas is celebrated every promise in the world to me. After 10 hours in the car with three other brothers, I was ready to get out and enjoy the winter scene stood before me in my grandparents house.
Upon entering the house, the smell of cookies and bread met my nose. There's nothing like the aroma of homemade goodsespecially grandmothers. The dining table is what caught my attention, though that day. Configuration for us children were ruby red, emerald green and crystal beads. Grandma explained that he wanted to teach us how to make Christmas ornaments for the tree. Always with the grandma was time deeply treasured, and I wanted desperately to get started.
For hours, the grandmother sat with me and my brothers and helped us in our wire stringing beads. We made candy canes, stars, bells, etc. Each unique ornament is designed exclusively by our own hand. When we finally finished our task, we put the ornaments on the Christmas tree and lights out. I can still see those little ornaments today. The colored light that broke through the accounts was nothing short of magical.
We did not have many material possessions that Christmas, but no matter. We had a grandmother who cared enough to spend quality time with us. While I am with my own children now and reflect on that winter day long ago, I can not help but want to try a little harder. Taking the time to crafting with children, teaching them to use their hands and imagination is priceless. Show them how to invent and create different trades and help in their development projects. Life has seemed to speed up a bit and it's hard to get away from daily distractions we face. For me, it's back to basics. It's time to give my children their own memories to smile warmly the years ahead.
